My new setup in the office is seriously confusing the cat: She keeps looking like she's contemplating attacking the laser printer. The shelf it sits on is level with the window sill, so she perches there and glares at the pages that come zipping out. I may have to install a net.

More linkery: A "review" of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings from the perspective of someone seriously into Role Playing Games. Hee.

I was talking to a friend today about the Bulwer-Lytton contest, an annual exercise in bad writing. It collects the worst first sentences of the most horrible books never written. My personal favorite is still this gem, the grand prize winner from 1984:

The lovely woman-child Kaa was mercilessly chained to the cruel post of the warrior-chief Beast, with his barbarous tribe now stacking wood at her nubile feet, when the strong, clear voice of the poetic and heroic Handsomas roared, "Flick your Bic, crisp that chick, and you'll feel my steel through your last meal."

Poetry.

A much better reading experience is coming at the hands of a couple of friends of mine, who are writing science fiction opuses (opi?) and who have graciously allowed me to be a draft reader. Little did they know that this would mean I would be calling them at random intervals, foaming at the mouth and screaming "I need more chapters! I want to find out what happens next!" I like to think that such, um, encouragement is simply an added service along with my editorial skills. (My most recent catches: site vs. sight, gait vs. gate and compliment vs. complement. What can I say, it gets the old editorial blood pumping.)

Speaking of which: This is the first news item on the Blogger page: Data point: Blogger now has over [to be said in your best Dr. Evil voice...] 1 Million Registered Users. Mwahahahaha... That's nice guys -- but it's MORE THAN, not over.

What's the difference, you ask? Consider this: Are those 1 million registered users hovering in the space above blogger? Is blogger floating atop the users? No. I think not.

Why does nobody get that right?
